Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

Could any one help, I have got some old 297-230 shells that are so old they will not fire. I’ve pulled a few and and the powder has turned to a solid brown mess. I would very much like to clean them...

Re: Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

DD is it a sizing die - unless they made the same mistake twice AND engraved/labelled them incorrectly?? Mine is the same....Longsliver you need something like one of...

Re: Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

That is a trim die, can be use form and size, but its purpose is to trim. My Morris dies from CH4D look like standard pistol size dies.

Re: Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

Before CH4D started making the dies, I made a forming die by using a chop saw on a .223 sizing die. I had to first chop  off the knurled section at the top ad turn it on a lathe so it could be...

Re: Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

Aloha all crazy sub caliber reloaders Interesting, if so should be caseharden and useable as such? Need to test. So DD back then to Longsilvers question, you mount then in the std press just at the...

jpd - I think you are right, just bought a extension from the US, so will report back once it arrives - suppose, could be annealing the case in the mean time! Martin

Re: Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

I suggest that you don't reform too many cases in your first batch.  Your chamber might not have the shoulder in exactly the same place as the die.  If you make a few cases and fire them you'll know...

The press set up with the extension - I think this is how it is supposed to work! What was a pain was that Lee had machined the cut-out to take the shell holder (at the top, at the back so you can not...

Re: Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

First shells out of the press! The problem is that the cases are so thick that they collapse rather that form in the press. I understood that I would have to ream the walls down, but I hoped to do it...

Re: Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

So what I did is make a collar to hold the cases, and bore them out larger and larger until I got them to form, and finish with the correct size hole for the bullets I've got. This is just to find the...

Re: Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

Unformed - Formed - Original I found the starting bore should be 6.8mm diameter. So I have ordered  a drill with a pilot boss, that I will adapt to fit in my cases trimmer. Just a shame that I have...

I found it was much easier pushing the shoulder back starting with full length hornet cases.

Re: Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

For future batches I would also suggest annealing the cases whilst still in the .22 Hornet configuration, that way you'll be less likely to over anneal the lower portion. I have a .297/.230 rifle...

Aloha All - I agree with joelblack88 comments.... 1. Anneal the top half of the full hornet 22 case (I have a cut down socket that protects the main body of the cartridge which is mounted in a handle...

Re: Restoring and build brass for the 297/230 Morris.

Cases from different manufacturers have different wall thickness where the new case mouth will be.  PPU cases need to be reamed but unreamed Remington cases end up with a case mouth that will accept...

Has anyone got any thoughts on this? Having finally got to gips with making cases from .22 Hornet, I still think it is a lot of work! So i have been messing around, trying to find some thing to do...
